Choc Chip Scones : ABC May 2012

It's time for Avid Baker's Challenge monthly bake! For this month, it is Big Batch Scones taken from The Weekend Baker, by Abigail Johnson Dodge, the book that ABC is currently baking from. For this recipe, Abby has given a couple of flavour variations for you to choose from. One of the flavour is chocolate chopped to small bits, I use choc chips instead, I never did like to cut up chocolates!

Scones are usually not so pretty looking, mine would definitely not win any prize in terms of appearance,  but don't "judge the book by its cover"! What they lack in appearance, they sure more than made up in taste!

Abby has given a mixture for a big batch, where the mixture can easily be stored and measured out in batches as and when you need them. How very convenient! She has also given the measurement for one single recipe and I chose this instead. One of the ingredient used is buttermilk, which I do not have, I just substitute with a mixture of milk and yoghurt.

The dough is quite sticky, but with a little dusting of flour on the worktop, your hands and on the dough, really helps. This is so easy to make that you'll be enjoying this within an hour! Would be great when my nieces and nephews come for a visit, they would definitely love this!

Overall rating : Delicious, tender, buttery scones! And even more yummy with the choc chips, lovely with a glass of cold milk!

  5. It is my first time hearing this chocolate chips scone. Must be nice having it with a cup of fresh milk. Kids definitely love this too. For me I'll still choose to go with chocolate chips instead of cutting those chocolate in pieces. With chocolate chunks, maybe it will melt in your mouth once you bite the scone.

BTW Finally, I've received my copy of my Coffee Cakes book by L.S. Pappas. Will be making the apricot, pistachio & lemon cake tomorrow! Hopefully it will turn out as well as yours! So excited! 12. What a nice flaky looking scone. I actually prefer the hand cut chocolate as it looks a little more home made than the perfect little chips, but to be truthful, I have used the chips more often than I care to admit, because they are easier!

  25. These are perfect for tea!! You should try baking with chocolate chunks some time e.g. Lindt 70% Dark Chocolate, the chocolate taste is more intense!

  30. Your scones look delicious - and that is, of course, the good thing: as home bakers we don't have to skimp on the costlier ingredients. A store bought one would never have that much chocolate in it.

  31. Those look delicious! I'm sure my husband would have preferred I made the chocolate flavor option.

  32. Great minds think alike!! I said the same thing "Don't judge a book by its cover!" How wild. I added orange zest with my chocolate and it was great.

  36. Hi Joyce!

Thanks for stopping by my site and leaving such a kind message. I’m so happy to be a part of ABC, and make some new blogging baker friends- hopefully you included. It's amazing to be baking along with someone on the other side of the world... I can't wait to read more about your kitchen adventures in Malaysia!

I don't think you gave yourself enough credit for your scones- they look fantastic to me. And you can't go wrong with classic chocolate chip :)

Hope you have a great weekend!
    Fondly,
    Joy
